About SG Motor Cunewalde

Our history

Sportgemeinschaft Motor Cunewalde was founded in 1950 as Betriebssportgemeinschaft Motor Cunewalde, supported by VEB Motorenwerk Cunewalde, and merged with SG Cunewalde in the same year. In 1953 it united with SG Weigsdorf-Köblitz and added a handball department whose teams represented Motor Cunewalde in the GDR field-handball league. Sporting activities also flourished in gymnastics, athletics, swimming, wrestling, boxing, football, fistball, volleyball, cycling, table tennis, bowling and chess. Werner Vogt, runner-up in the world championship for artistic cycling, was arguably the most successful competitor to wear the Motor colours.

Since 1990, Motor Cunewalde has operated as a registered association. Throughout its existence, the multi-sport club has remained closely connected to the village community.

Our club today

Currently, as of 2026, more than 570 members—including almost 200 children and young people aged 3 to 18—participate in competitive and recreational sport across five departments or support the club through passive membership. SG Motor Cunewalde e.V. is therefore one of the largest sports clubs in the Bautzen district.

Training and competition focus particularly on children and young people. SG Motor Cunewalde e.V. offers them a wide variety of sporting opportunities used by many children and young people. More detailed information is available on the individual department pages.
