Gold and bronze for Cunewalde at the Ostsachsen youth table tennis district championships
On 3 and 4 October 2026, the district singles championships for youth of the Spielbezirk Ostsachsen in table tennis took place in Neusalza-Spremberg.
For these championships, 16-year-old Friedemann Blümel (age class U19) from our table tennis department of SG Motor Cunewalde had qualified. Qualification alone for these district championships is already a major achievement.
On 4 October Friedemann started in the U19 boys’ tournament. Sixteen boys competed in the singles and doubles for top places.
In the group stage of the singles competition, Friedemann’s opponents were Ben Gärtner (SV Eckartsberg), Bennet Thomalla and Nathanael Lehmann (both MSV Bautzen 04). After exciting matches he advanced as group winner with 3:0 points into the final rounds, which are played in a knockout format. In the quarterfinal he defeated Oskar Herbst of Post SV Görlitz 3:0. The semifinal was contested against Sachsenliga player and later district champion Moritz Drube of Post SV Görlitz, where he narrowly lost 1:3 (9:11, 9:11, 11:9, 9:11). The match featured many high-quality, at times spectacular, rallies.
Thus Friedemann (2nd from the right in the awards photo) was able to celebrate winning the bronze medal in the singles and the qualification for the STTV state singles championships on 13 December 2026 in Wilkau-Haßlau. Runner-up was Alfons Tietze (Post SV Görlitz), and the second bronze medal went to Richard Hilse (SV Eckartsberg).
In the doubles competition, Friedemann and his partner Moritz Drube won the quarterfinal against the Bautzen pair Tim Pietsch/Nathanael Lehmann 3:0. In the semifinal they also won convincingly 3:0 against the brother pairing Ben and Luca Gärtner from SV Eckartsberg. In the final Friedemann and Moritz achieved a narrow 3:1 victory (8:11, 11:9, 11:5, 11:9) over the pairing Alfons Tietze (Post SV Görlitz)/Maurice Wenzel (TTC Neusalza-Spremberg 02). Friedemann and Moritz were able to celebrate winning the gold medal in the doubles (see awards photo, Moritz 3rd from left, Friedemann 4th from left). Congratulations to the medal winners!
Friedemann was coached at this tournament by Stefan Blümel.
