Silver and bronze for Cunewalde at the East Saxony District Youth Championships
On 26 and 27 October 2024 the district individual youth championships of the Spielbezirk Ostsachsen in table tennis took place in Burkau.
For these championships, from our Table Tennis Department of SG Motor Cunewalde the 14-year-old Friedemann Blümel (age categories U15 and U19) and the 15-year-old Lenny Weickert (U19) qualified. The mere qualification of our table tennis‑enthusiastic boys for these district championships is already a great success.
On 26 October Friedemann started in the U15 competition. Sixteen boys fought in singles and doubles for top placements.
In the group stage of the singles competition Friedemann drew a strong group. After exciting matches he advanced as group winner to the final round, which is played in a knockout format. In the final round Friedemann first reached the semifinal, where he won a tight five‑set thriller against Finn Lehmann from MSV Bautzen 04. In the final Friedemann faced Sachsenliga player Moritz Drube from Post SV Görlitz and lost 0:3.
Thus Friedemann was able to celebrate winning the silver medal in the singles and qualifying for the STTV state individual championships on 17 November 2024 in Kubschütz.
In the doubles Friedemann and his partner Tristan Bramborg from TTC Hoyerswerda made it to the semifinals, where they narrowly lost 1:3 to the later district champion pair Moritz Drube and Oskar Herbst from Post SV Görlitz. Friedemann and Tristan could therefore celebrate winning the bronze medal in the doubles. Congratulations to the medal winners!
On 27 October Lenny and Friedemann from Cunewalde took part in the district championship tournament for U19, which featured sixteen boys. Both boys fought bravely for every point. In this age group there are no easy opponents anymore. Lenny unfortunately finished the group stage as fourth in his group; among his opponents was, among others, the later district champion Moritz Drube. Friedemann finished second in his group and nearly defeated the group winner Lenny Aust from SG Lückersdorf-Gelenau. The group winners and runners‑up qualified for the knockout final round. In the final round Friedemann was eliminated in the quarterfinals, losing 0:3 to the later bronze medalist Lenny Tschirner from TTC Neusalza-Spremberg.
In the doubles Lenny and Friedemann were unlucky in the draw. In the quarterfinals they lost 0:3 to the favored pair Alfons Tietze and Moritz Drube from Post SV Görlitz. The Sachsenliga players Alfons and Moritz later became district champions.
