Hard-fought victory against Wehrsdorf - 3 points stay in Cunewalde
+++ Hard-fought win against Wehrsdorf - 3 points stay in Cunewalde +++
On 28 March 2026 the third-from-bottom and the second-from-bottom in the Kreisliga faced each other. Accordingly, the match was characterised from the start by duels and commitment rather than fine build-up play. Both teams relied on long balls as a means to an end.
Many turnovers, sloppy passes and scrappy attacks shaped the game on both sides, so there was little flow and few goal-threatening actions.
In the 35th minute Mieth had the lead at his feet after getting past two players and emerging one-on-one with the keeper. The Wehrsdorf goalkeeper, however, was able to parry the shot.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with goalmouth scenes remaining scarce.
The roughly 150 spectators (including "ultra groups" from both clubs) had to wait until the 72nd minute for the home side to once again appear dangerous in front of goal. Striegler produced an impressive run and was illegally brought down by his opponent. The referee saw it differently, though, and, to the home team’s surprise, waved play on.
In the 81st minute Mieth finally relieved the home side: after a failed attempt by Böhme, Thunig picked up the ball, fought strongly against his opponent in the box and calmly laid it across to Mieth, who slotted in to give cunewalde the lead.
The visitors rallied afterwards but created no dangerous chances. As the home side also squandered their remaining opportunities, it ended with a narrow but vitally important 1:0 for our cunewalde boys.
With the three points they climb one place to 11th and now have a 14-point cushion to the relegation zone.
